"No matter whether in Hangzhou, Beijing or Guangzhou, the official policies and attitudes were all about the same. The difference was that there were certain people who were willing to break through this kind of oppressiveness and organize some events and activities. In this respect, perhaps the city of Guangzhou is most consistent in its thinking, style and policies. Guangzhou is a city rich in material life. There are many opportunities, and from very early on, commerce and business dazzled people. The city did have some New Wave Art activity, but in the grand scheme of business and trade, this didn’t attract that much attention."
