“I’m very interested in traditional art forms and expression. At that time, I traveled to the Hunan and the Hubei Provincial Museums as well as Xi’an, the Yungang grottoes in Datong and the Longmen Caves outside Luoyang. Actually, I’ve been to all of China’s major sculptural sites, particularly those with examples of lacquer and bronze work. I came to understand expressive power in the magnificent simplicity of Northern Han dynasty murals or in the whimsical ceramic patterns of Eastern Zhou pottery in Hubei and Hunan. My sculpture integrated numerous influences from such fine art traditions. I also wanted to break through the form of Chinese ceramic, sculptural and mural painting traditions to create a new artistic language.”
