Lu Peng (b. 1956, Chongqing) is an art historian and curator. After graduating from the Political Education Department at Sichuan Normal University in 1982, Lu served as the editor for Theatre and Film (Xiju yu dianying) magazine. During that period Lu focused on Western art history research and translation. In 1991, he published A History of Modern Art in China, 1979–1989 with Yi Dan. This publication is considered one of the most important early publications about Chinese art in the 1980s. In the early 1990s, Lu was one of the chief organizers of the first Guangzhou Biennial, through which he put forward the concept of the art market. Lu holds a Ph.D. from the China Academy of Art (2004), and is currently an Associate Professor at the China Academy of Art.
Materials donated by Lu Peng can be divided into four main categories: (1) information about artists, such as exhibition proposals, manuscripts, slides, photographs, and exhibition files; (2) correspondence among artists and critics during the late 1980s and early 1990s; (3) information relating to various events organized by Lu (including the first Guangzhou Biennial, 1992); and (4) primary sources on which his publication A History of Modern Art in China, 1979–1989 was based. A selection of these materials is presented here.
